Spider-Man: No Way Home movie trailer seemingly reveals the inclusion of Doctor Octopus, Electro and more.
The Spider-Man: No Way Home movie trailer dropped recently, and we got our first look at Marvel’s latest Spiderman instalment. Fan favourite Tom Holland has played the part of our resident wall crawler since he first made an appearance in the 2016 Captain America: Civil War movie. Subsequently Holland has also starred in two solo outings as Spider-Man and has also had parts to play in the two final Avengers movies. Sony and Marvel were able to strike a new deal in 2019, which allows Spider-Man to remain in the MCU for a little while longer, which is music to the ears of all Marvel fans across the globe.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third entry in Marvel’s Spider-Man movies. Tom Holland will once again reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and we will pick up where we left off from the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home. For those that need a recap, the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home saw Peter Parker’s secret identity as Spider-Man compromised. He was also framed for murdering Mysterio, and we presume he will now be on the run from the law. Zendaya will also be reprising her role as Mary Jane, while Jacob Batalon returns as Ned Leeds and Maria Tomei continues to play Aunt May. Benedict Cumberbatch will join the cast as Dr Strange which will no doubt excite all Marvel fans. Perhaps the bigger news is that Alfred Molina who played Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2 will also reprise his role, and Jamie Fox returns as Electro from the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies. Interesting developments indeed, and this all but confirms that there will be a crossover between all three cinematic Spiderverses in the upcoming movie.
The trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home showcases Molina’s Doc Ock saying ‘Hello Peter’ in typically sinister fashion. The return of Willam Dafoe’s Green Goblin is also hinted as we hear his menacing laugh in the trailer, and his pumpkin bombs from the 2002 Spider-Man movies are also revealed. Although Dafoe isn’t explicitly shown in the trailer, these are strong hints that he may be in the final cut of the movie. You can check out the full trailer below.
The Spider-Man: No Way From Home trailer mostly works to set up the plot of the upcoming movie. The movie will evidently pick up from where we left off in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It looks like Parker was arrested by the police, and so was his best friend Ned alongside Aunt May. Interestingly at one point in the trailer there is a shot of Peter with a man in a white button up shirt and tie. Could this be Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch who is heavily rumoured to also be making an appearance in the movie? ‘Reality bending’ appears to be a theme in the movie, which would be consistent with the supposed supernatural twist Marvel is apparently going for with their phase four slate of movies - kicked off by Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
As well as potentially revealing all of the characters mentioned above, you will also notice that there is a shot of yellow lighting in the trailer. This could be Jamie Fox’s Electro. Although Electro had blue lightning in the Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fox did tease a new look for Electro in a now deleted Instagram post. Yellow lightning could very well be a part of the new look Electro – which would make sense given the colour scheme of the character in the comics. All of these developments would point to the fact that Marvel will be acknowledging the past Spider-Man movies as part of the MCU multiverse. We’re all interested to see how these elements will fit in and play out. Bring it on Marvel, we’re ready for the ride!
