Marvel's Eternals Set At The Same Time As Spider-Man: Far From Home

Where in the MCU timeline do the events of the upcoming Eternals movie happen? Marvel has now answered this question.

Marvel has now confirmed where in the timeline the upcoming Eternals movie takes place. The story of the Eternals is set to take place at the same time as Spider-Man: Far From Home. This means the events of the movie happen after Avengers: Endgame. There is no denying that the Marvel extended universe has been a huge success story for the studio. However, it goes without saying that finding ways to ensure each new franchise in the universe fits in with the continuity of the previous movies will be no easy feat. This is something that Eternals will have to contend with as well.

Eternals will introduce audiences everywhere to an ancient group of aliens. The Eternals have almost godlike powers and have been around for many thousands of years. We’ve seen glimpses in the trailers where the characters explain why they didn’t get involved in the war against Thanos, notwithstanding their extraordinary powers. Another titbit we got from the recent Eternals trailer is the suggestion that the movie takes place right after the events of Avengers: Endgame. This theory makes sense as it is stated in the trailer that the Hulk brought about an event called the ‘Emergence’ when he used the Infinity Gauntlet in Endgame.

Marvel producer Nate Moore recently sat down for an interview with Empire Magazine and confirmed that although the theory above gets close to predicting the timelines of Eternals, it isn’t entirely accurate. Moore stated that the movie takes place "right around the same time as Spider-Man: Far From Home, with the world recovering from the attack of Thanos and the return of half the world population." The events of Endgame appear to have taken place in October 2023 and the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home happen in 2024. 2024 is the year that Eternals presumably takes place.

A lot of us are interested in watching the Marvel movies in order of chronology rather than in order of theatrical release dates. For those interested, here is a list of all the post Endgame Marvel movies and TV shows in the order that they happen.

  • Avengers: Endgame

  • Loki

  • Marvel's What If...?

  • WandaVision

  • Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings

  • The Falcon & the Winter Soldier

  • Eternals & Spider-Man: Far From Home

Whether placing the events of Eternals at this particular point in time actually works remains to be seen. Continuity has been a problem for Marvel post Endgame due to the fact the movie inserted a five year time jump in between Infinity War and Endgame. Although this works very well to tell the story of the Thanos and the devastating consequences of his actions, it has made things a little tricky for the next phase of Marvel movies. Every new franchise that comes out within the MCU will now have to explain how they fit in to this timeline and what each new character was doing pre and post Endgame, which could become quite tiresome after a while.
