Charlie Cox Believes Daredevil Revival In MCU Could Tarnish Character

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

Doesn't Charlie Cox want to reprise his role as Matt Murdoch/Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Charlie Cox, who most recently played Daredevil in the axed Netflix show, believes that resurrecting the character in the MCU could be anti-climactic for fans. Daredevil streamed on Netflix for three complete seasons before it was cancelled, along with all the other Marvel Netflix shows like Iron Fist, Punisher and Luke Cage that were part of the same project back then.

Most recent rumors suggested that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil character could make his much anticipated return on screen in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home movie. Rumors heated up due to the fact that Spider-Man: No Way Home appears to be playing with the idea of crossing over all of the Marvel multiverses including the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield iterations of Spider-Man. This has led many to believe it would also be a perfect opportunity to incorporate the Netflix Marvel Universe into the current MCU, setting things up for future projects.

Charlie Cox recently spoke to Sirius XM and touched on these rumors of a Daredevil revival in the MCU. He warned that fans would not be getting the same Daredevil as they got in the Netflix series if Marvel decided to bring the character back. He also feels Marvel would most likely recast and reboot the character in order to enable the character to fit in line with the current tone of the MCU. Below is Cox had to say:

‘What happens in the comics is a writer and an artist will team up for a run of a comic, so they’ll do 10 issues, 20 issues. If there was an opportunity for me to come back as Daredevil, whatever that would look like, I imagine it would be a reimagining of the character and the show. If they choose me to do it, there are going to be some elements that are of course the same. Or they might choose someone else and reboot it all over again.
You’ve got to be careful what you wish for. You come back and it’s not as good or it doesn’t quite work or it’s too much time has passed. It doesn’t quite come together in the same way. You don’t want to taint what you’ve already got. If we never come back, you’ve got these three great seasons and our third season was our best reviewed. So, the trajectory was up. I am tremendously proud and grateful for what we have.’

This isn’t the first time that Charlie Cox has been asked about a potential return of his portrayal of Daredevil. Back in September Cox briefly spoke of the subject of a return yet again and went on to say that he doesn’t want to "say something that could potentially jeopardize those chances."

Reviewing Charlie Cox’s comments, it appears to be likely that he would be interested in reviving the role of Daredevil, but at the same time he also seems keen to manage fans’ expectations in case their wish never comes to fruition. We’ll all just have to wait and see what happens. It is safe to say that most fans would love to see Charlie Cox return to their screens as Daredevil once again.
